Venues will be ready before August deadline: Government

W

ith four months to go before the beginning of the 26th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, to be held in Jakarta and Palembang, only three sports venues in the capital are ready to host the biennial event.

On Tuesday Deputy Jakarta Governor Prijanto said the city planned to have all 24 venues ready by August.

“We need all the venues ready by August, because they are scheduled to be tested at the end of the month,” Prijanto said.

As of Tuesday, however, only three venues were ready to be tested, namely, the bowling alley in Ancol, North Jakarta; the table tennis venue at Soemantri Sports Hall in South Jakarta; and a golf course in the Jagorawi area of East Jakarta.

Prijanto, however, promised that all the Jakarta venues would be ready on time.

“All the repair work for the venues is running according to schedule,” he said.

The central government has allocated up to Rp 70 billion (US$8.12 million) for the Jakarta administration to renovate 20 venues across the city.

However, according to data from the Jakarta Youth and Sports Ministry, the repairs on five of the venues is behind schedule.

The venues allegedly behind schedule are a basketball stadium in Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta; an archery field in Senayan, Central Jakarta; kempo courts in Ciracas, East Jakarta; futsal fields and a taekwondo court in Cibubur, East Jakarta; and a marathon swimming pool in Ancol; North Jakarta.

Separately on Tuesday, Jakarta Youth and Sports Ministry chief Ratiyono said his office was targeting to have 12 venues ready next month.

Ratiyono also said that the city would not use Wisma Atlet athletes’ housing complex in Senayan, but instead would use hotels.

“The hotels we will use will be located [closer to] the respective athletes’ sporting venues,” he said.

Ratiyono, however, said Jakarta had not yet secured accommodation arrangements with the hotel managers.

“We are targeting 18 hotels across Jakarta. We have sent proposal letters to [the hotel managers],” he added.

Jakarta will act as the co-host of the regional event, and will be responsible for 24 sports events.

As the main host, Palembang will organize the opening and closing ceremonies and provide venues for 22 events.

Approximately 6.000 participants from 11 ASEAN countries are expected to take part in the SEA Games this year.

This will be the first time Indonesia has hosted the Games since 1997, which was also the last time it finished as the overall champion in the medal tally.
