EKANBARU: Riau General Election Commission (KPUD) has fired Yusri Munaf from his position as head of Pekanbaru’s KPUD, due to violations that have led to the need for a repeat election to choose Pekanbaru’s mayor, as ordered by the Constitutional Court.

Tengku Edy Sabli, a member of KPUD Riau, said Monday that Yusri was officially discharged on July 15, 2011, due to his unprofessional conduct.

“The decision to fire Yusri was taken because Yusri was found to have violated KPU Regulation No. 31/2008 on the code of ethics for KPUD members. The sanction was in line with a recommendation from the general election supervisory body, after the latter received reports on vote rigging, plus the fact that Yusri took sides in the election,” Edy said.

According to Edy, the dismissal was decided at a plenary meeting on Friday night, together with the honorary council of the Riau KPUD, to evaluate the Pekanbaru mayoral election which was held on May 18, 2011. The Riau election commission also advised four members of KPUD Pekanbaru to carry out the repeat election, on Sept. 14, fairly. “They were strongly reprimanded as they had let Yusri carry out his violations,” Edy said.
