Di Bawah Lindungan Ka’bah (under protection of the Kaaba) is a film set in 1920s Padang set to be released on Aug. 16.

The story follows Hamid and Zainab, who are from different social stratum but fall in love and are united by their dream of making the pilgrimage to Mecca. Di Bawah Lindungan Ka’bah stars Herjunot Ali and Laudya Cynthia Bella.

On-location shooting took place at the Ambarawa Train Museum in Central Java from April 30 to May 6. Although much of the shooting for the film was in Padang, director Hanny R. Saputra had to look elsewhere for a steam train to shoot important scenes.

The progress of shooting while the train was moving took many takes over a number of days, with hundreds of extras involved. Shooting came to halt a few times due to rain.

The photos here were taken by one extra playing the role of a Dutch noblewoman, and who was given free rein to photograph behind the scenes during lulls in shooting.

Setting the scene: Di Bawah Lindungan Ka’bah was filmed in multiple locations in Indonesia.

On set: The film is set in 1920s Padang and extras wore period clothing.
