A call to collect trash in Tidung islet

W

anting a fun weekend with travel, while you can also perform good deeds? Join Gabung Mulung Tidung 2 (GMT2) on Sept. 17-18, 2011.

It is the sequel to an event in May, where more than 200 tourists joined in to not only have a short vacation, but also to clean Tidung from trash. Tidung is a favourite tourist destination in the Thousands Islands in North Jakarta, yet it has a woeful garbage issue, due to a mixture of visitors’ lax attitudes toward littering as well as sea-borne rubbish emanating from Jakarta.

The upcoming event invites more partakers, and offers more than just the trash issue. With the tagline “Clean Tidung, Clever Generation”, organizers encourage participants to also donate reading books for children living on the island.

A couple of other environmental conservation programs will be carried out, too. To protect the island from erosion, maintain the coastline, purify the sea from chemicals and pollutants, and sustain an underwater nursery area, the group will plant thousands of fresh mangroves. Besides that, they plan to minimize coral destruction due to boats’ anchors being thrown into it by the provision of cube stones. Instead of imbedding the ballast, fi shermen can moor their boats by binding them to the stones.

This recreational-cum-charity-cum-green mode of vacation will cost each participant Rp 190,000 only. This covers a boat ticket, non airconditioned lodging, meals, GMT2 T-shirt, and other supporting kits, like trash bags and mangrove seedlings. It is hoped that 600 people will get involved; all those interested need to register by Aug. 30, 2011.

And if you have more to offer than just being a participant, why not consider becoming a sponsor? The event’s organiser, www.kakigatel.com is in need of sponsors to make the charity bigger.

For further information about GMT2, visit their Facebook page, “Charity Event - Gabung Mulung Tidung 2”, or send an email to kakigatel@ gmail.com. So, the call is on. Get your backpack ready and let’s get going!
