AKARTA: The city’s Population and Civil Registration Agency said that as of Tuesday it had gathered information from 529,032 city residents for the electronic identity (e-ID) card program.
Data collection started on Aug. 12.
“We are behind schedule, but we are trying to keep up,” agency head Purba Hutapea said on Tuesday.
Around 7 million of Jakarta’s estimated 9.6 million population are expected to get new identity cards by the end of this year as part of a national program to establish a single identity number system.
In the e-ID program, residents are required to visit their local subdistrict office to provide basic information and have their biometric data taken.
The information will then be sent to the Home Ministry database for validation. One week after the data collection, residents should receive their new IDs. The city said it was still waiting for the ministry to supply the cards.
