Life leads you forward
ife leads you forward. Music can be good company during the bumpy road ahead. You’ve got to keep it with you all the time.
The brothers (and one sister) from Wonderbra are well aware of this. They have been walking together since college. Music has been their runaway guilty pleasure.
The band plays a hefty range of rock featuring stylish bluesy vocals from Thera, backed by Asep on bass and Nosa and Yudha on guitar. Their first album was released in 2007, which was followed nearly four years later by their sophomore effort, #fiksiriksi.
“It took us four years because we all were busy with daily work. Spare time during our college years was a lot easier to come by. We’re trying our best to cope,” Thera said.
Asep said the band was playing catch-up after college. “Efforts to adapt everything to our work routines has lowered our musical productivity. Time spent in the studio is shorter. We really need to steal time in between to work on songs.”
The band’s latest, which makes it clear they’ve definitely reached a new stage, shows how band lyricists Thera and Nosa have matured.
“The [songs] all come from stories around our lives, from what we read and even the news we watch on television. They’re all observations of ideas that spread around us, from the complicated to the simple. They’re all our reactions,” Thera said.
Asep was more specific in the changes to the lyrics. “Most probably, the lyrics come from what those guys read. Thera is fond of feminist and dystopian literature, while Nosa loves anthropology and Marxist readings.”
Listening to Wonderbra’s latest backs up that assessment. On a certain level, the way band members express themselves is something nice to watch, both on and off the stage.
Wonderbra has few catchy tunes worth catching live. But, sadly, don’t look to see the them anytime soon. Wonderbra is on hiatus after Thera got a scholarship to study in the United States.
“Fans can still watch the band through the Internet. We’re still available on the Internet. The information age helps our problem,” says Wonderbra’s other guitarist, Yudha.
“I’ll be back around 2013,” says Thera.
