ANGERANG: The Banten General Election Commission (KPUD) disclosed on Wednesday the wealths of the candidates running in the Oct. 22 gubernatorial election.

Incumbent Governor Ratu Atut Chosiyah is the wealthiest candidate with Rp 37.7 billion (US$4.1 million), the KPUD said. The second-wealthiest candidate is Irna Narulita, the running mate of Tangerang mayor Wahidin Halim, with Rp 22.6 billion. Irna is also the wife of Pandeglang Regent Dimyati Natakusumah. Coming in third is Ratu Atut’s running mate, movie star-turned-politician Rano Karno, with Rp 13 billion.

Wahidin is the fourth-richest with Rp 9.5 billion, while candidates nominated by the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Jazuli Juwaini and his running mate Makmun Muzakki are at the bottom of the list with Rp 2.8 billion and Rp 676 million, respectively.

KPUD chairman Hambali said the disclosure of the candidates’ wealth was part of efforts to improve transparency in politics.

“We should announce the verification results of the candidates’ wealth based on the order we received from the Corruption Eradication Commission [KPK],” Hambali told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

Data from the KPUD also said that the wealth of Ratu Atut had in fact declined from the Rp 42 billion she had declared in 2006.

The KPUD compiled the data from property, vehicles, bank deposits, jewelries and securities based on data provided by the KPK. The antigraft body collected the data earlier in June.
