AKARTA: The Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD) is planning to set the date for next year’s gubernatorial elections for July 11.
KPUD chairman Juri Ardiantoro said that the poll date was previously on Aug. 8, coinciding with the year’s fasting month of Ramadhan.
“If the poll date is set on Aug. 8, then we would have campaigning during the fasting. The commission considers this to be inappropriate. Postelection processes would also coincide with Idul Fitri,” Juri said.
Regulations mandate that an election must be held no later than two months before the end of an incumbent’s term. The first term of Governor Fauzi Bowo will end on Oct. 7, 2012, meaning that an election must be scheduled before Aug. 7, 2012.
Juri said that the decision for the poll date would be made before the end of October.
