AKARTA: Two Indonesian high school students won silver medals at the Hong Kong International Science Fair (HKISF), which was held in Hong Kong on Oct. 16–18.
Irhan Rosyadi and Ghamdan Bagus Putra won the medals for their scientific work on SMS Gateway as an Alternative to a computer answer sheet.
Irhan said the innovation was a modified short message service (SMS) to send school examination answers without paper. ”All you need is an SMS Gateway modem that can only receive SMSs and a computer to process data. We used the Microsoft Excel program to process our data,” Irhan said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Subiyanto, a teacher assisting the students, said that the innovation reduced operational cost of sending exam answers.
”A scanner to process students answer sheets can cost up to Rp 50 million (US$5,650), while a modem for the SMS service only costs Rp 2.5 million,” he said.
