JAKARTA: Komodo Island has seen a 300 percent increase in tourist numbers as it continues its bid as one of the New7Wonders finalists
AKARTA: Komodo Island has seen a 300 percent increase in tourist numbers as it continues its bid as one of the New7Wonders finalists.
“The number of tourists jumped three times after the island was listed as a New7Wonders finalist,” West Manggarai regent Agustinus Ch. Dulla recently told newsportal tempointeraktif.com.
Komodo Island is one of the top five of 28 finalists in the New7Wonders competition.
Agustinus said that in 2009, before joining the News7Wonders competition, the number of tourists coming to Komodo Island was 15,000, which increased to 43,000 in 2010 and 36,000 as of August this year.
“In 2011, we target having 50,000 tourists coming to visit Komodo Island,” he said.
Despite the increase in tourist numbers, the island has yet to develop proper infrastructure, such as a national-level hospital, airport or tourist port. Agustinus said he hoped the central government would support infrastructure construction in the region, especially if Komodo was selected as a world wonder.
