n official says that more than 7.5 million people are eligible to vote in Jakarta’s next gubernatorial election.

Jakarta Population and Civil Registration Agency chief Purba Hutapea said on Tuesday that 7,546,727 people were on the agency’s list of eligible voters.

“I can guarantee that the figure is accurate, with no resident counted twice,” Purba said.

According to the agency, Jakarta had a population of 10.1 million people as of Nov. 1, up from 9.6 million recorded during last year’s national census.

Purba said that the agency would send updated information on the city’s population to the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD) before Dec. 14.

“By Jan. 14, we will have submitted a fixed number of voters eligible to vote in the poll,” Purba said.

Separately, local KPUD member Aminullah said that the commission would double check the agency’s voter rolls.

“We will dispatch field workers in February and March next year to verify the list,” Aminullah said.

The KPUD fixed July 11 as the date for the city’s next gubernatorial election, moving it up from Aug. 8, after learning that Ramadhan would fall in August in 2012.

Governor Fauzi Bowo’s term will expire on Oct. 7, 2012 and an election must be held on or before Aug. 7, 2012, according to the Regional Autonomy Law, which stipulates that an election must take place no later than two months before the end of an incumbent’s term.

The local KPUD will start registering candidates starting in March.

Fauzi, a member of the Democratic Party’s central board and the most recognizable potential candidate in 2012, has yet to announce if he would seek re-election.
