The first shooting incident took place in Ule Kareng, Banda Aceh, with the victim identified as Wa-gino, who was known as a doll shop attendant.

He was shot dead inside the shop, located by a busy street.

The second shooting incident took place in Bireun regency, about 250 kilometers east of Banda Aceh.

The victims were Suparno, 31, Daud, 30 and Sunyoto, 28, all from towns in East Java. Antara news agency mentioned the individuals as Suparno, Daud and Tom.

The three were among those working on a telecommunications network when the incident took place at 9 p.m. at their rented house, which was located by a road connecting Aceh and North Sumatra, about 2 kilometers from Bireun town. “Seven other workers were also injured. They are undergoing medical treatment at Fauziah Bireun Hospital,” said Adj. Sn. Comr. Gustav Leo, the spokesperson of Aceh Police.

The survivors are Andri, 15, Hasan, 35, Kirul, 30, Imam, 27, Kopral, 32, and Aan, 40.

According to Bireun Police chief Adj. Sn. Comr. Yuri Karsono, the perpetrators were believed to have used an AK 47 guns.

“We are still questioning witnesses,” Yuri said.

One of the survivors said that they had been sleeping after a tiring day at work when they were awakened by shots, prompting them to run for cover.

“We don’t know yet about the motive. We are still hunting down the perpetrators,” Gustav said.

Aceh is the only administration to have scrutinized citizens in celebrating New Year’s Eve. They banned celebrations that used fireworks and trumpets, which they said were not in accordance with Islamic teaching.

New Year’s Eve has played host to violence in the province in previous years.

Ten people, including two children, were killed and 30 others wounded when a powerful bomb exploded in Peureulak, East Aceh, in 2004.

The blast took place during a concert at a crowded night market. Six were killed instantly and the remaining four, including a one-and-a-half-year-old boy and seven-year-old boy, died in hospital.
