Aceh is the only administration to have scrutinized citizens in celebrating New Year’s Eve. They banned celebrations that used fireworks and trumpets, which they said were not in accordance with Islamic teaching.
New Year’s Eve has played host to violence in the province in previous years.
Ten people, including two children, were killed and 30 others wounded when a powerful bomb exploded in Peureulak, East Aceh, in 2004.
The blast took place during a concert at a crowded night market. Six were killed instantly and the remaining four, including a one-and-a-half-year-old boy and seven-year-old boy, died in hospital.
