n a joint raid against an international drug ring, the National Narcotics Board and the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Police confiscated 50 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine worth Rp 308 billion (US$ 33.88 million) kept in an apartment room in Taman Anggrek, West Jakarta, the police revealed on Monday.
Airport police chief Sr. Comr. Reynhard Silitonga said that in the raid held on Sunday, they also seized 357,000 ecstasy pills as evidence and arrested the alleged owner, a Malaysia national identified as KTC.
The raid was made following a tip from AN, an Indonesian who had been arrested at the airport earlier for trying to smuggling in the drugs.
“Based on the information we received from AN, we developed the case until we found the suspect along with the drugs at Taman Anggrek apartment,” Reynhard told reporters in a press conference at the airport Monday, adding that it was the biggest haul of the year.
According to Reynhard, the detectives had to follow the suspects as they made their transactions from Jakarta to Banjarmasin and Pontianak, and from Medan to Surabaya and Jakarta in order to build a complete picture of the ring they said was controlled by the Chinese-Malaysian man, and to set up an effective sting operation.
“But KTC is under the control of the ring in Malaysia along with another person now in a prison here. We have held some names … We just need to net the Malaysian drug syndicate,” he said.
Head of narcotics directorate at the National Police Brig. Gen. Arman Depari said that the syndicate was the supplier of high quality drugs from Malaysia.
“The ecstasy is produced in the Netherlands; the crystal methamphetamine is produced in Iran, while marijuana is brought from Aceh. They smuggled the drugs in various ways into the country,” he said, adding that some deliveries and orders were directly controlled from Malaysia and a prison in Indonesia.
Head of the Jakarta Police drug directorate Sr. Comr. Nugroho Aji Wijayanto said that the police were still looking into the possibility of accomplices at the customs and excise office.
