AP/Lai Seng Sin Adding to the list of Indonesia’s injured shuttlers, men’s singles Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka and women’s doubles Anneke Feinya Agustine and Nitya Krishinda Maheswari had to abandon all hope at the Malaysia Open Superseries badminton championship in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Losing 11-21 in his first game to Chinese opponent Chen Jin, Hayom quit during his second game in the tournament’s second round.

“[Hayom] sprained his right thigh muscle, thus he was unable to continue playing,” national men’s singles coach Agus Dwi Santoso said as quoted by the Indonesian Badminton Association’s (PBSI) website on Thursday. Agus said the injury occurred after Hayom’s rubber match opener with host shuttler Muhammad Hafiz Hashim.

Meanwhile, women’s doubles player Nitya noticed a hip injury during her opening match against pair Lee So-hee and Shin Seung-chan of South Korea. Nonetheless, the Indonesian pair tamed the 2011 world junior champions with a straight 24-22, 21-18.

“I felt the pain since the second game of the opener, but I persisted because we were leading. However, it is best that we resign now to prevent this injury from getting worse. I don’t want to be in a recovery period for too long,” Nitya said before returning to Jakarta.

The world No. 18 Indonesians’ walkover provided a great advantage for the host’s world No. 21 duo Hoo Kah Mun Vivian and Woon Khe Wei, who are currently on the rise since after unexpectedly snatching a Grand Prix Gold title at the Indonesia Open last October.

Hoo and Woon will cruise to Friday’s quarters where they will meet Chinese pair Yi Xin Bao and Zhong Qian Xin. The young Malaysians stunned third seeds Miyuki Maeda — Satoko Suetsuna in a thrilling 15-21, 21-19, 21-17 rubber opener a day earlier. Within six months, Hoo and Woon hope to be among the top 16 pairs to qualify for the London Olympics.

Three pairs of men’s doubles — seventh-seed seniors Alvent Yulianto Chandra and Hendra Aprida Gunawan; their junior pair Angga Pratama and Ryan Agung Saputra; and fifth-seed Olympic hopefuls M. Ahsan and Bona Septano — all had to pack their bags and leave the US$400,000 tournament.

Mixed doubles Muhammad Rijal and Debby Susanto were unable to hold off world top Chinese mixed duo Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei, losing 16-21, 14-21.

Veteran Taufik Hidayat and men’s duo Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan brought some good news for Indonesia, as they booked quarterfinals tickets, after Taufik beat Vietnamese Nguyen Tien Minh 21-11, 21-14 and Markis and Hendra triumphed over Malaysian pair Mak Hee Chun and Ong Soon Hock 21-16, 21-13.

The Beijing Olympics gold medalists will take on Chinese third-seed Chai Biao and Guo Zhendong on Friday, while Athens Olympics gold medalist Taufik will likely meet the host’s world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei.

In a late Thursday all-Indonesian clash between singles Tommy Sugiarto and seventh seed Simon Santoso, the seventh seed Simon defeat Tommy 21-18, 21-15.

Mixed doubles Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir was set for another late clash against Russians Vitalij Durkin and Nina Vislova.
