AKARTA: State railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) said on Wednesday that the concrete balls installed on Tuesday had been effective in warding off rooftop riders in their first two days of operation.
“Trains numbered 275, 277 and 279 had no rooftop riders. We believe these concrete balls are quite effective,” KAI’s head of enforcement Akhmad Sujadi said, referring to three diesel trains serving the route between Bekasi and Jakarta Kota stations.
He added that KAI was also planning to install similar concrete balls on the railway between Tambung and Cikarang as well as between Kedunggedeh and Lemahabang. The first three are located in Bekasi regency while Lemahabang is in the neighboring regency of Karawang.
Jakarta Transportation Council (DTKJ) chief Azas Tigor Nainggolan said that the installation of the concrete balls was a form of human rights violation. “The concrete balls can be dangerous for train passengers. It violates their rights and [those responsible for its installation] could be punished by the law.”
