AKARTA: National Police Spokesman Ir. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution said Tuesday that the police were investigating a tax official, identified as AR, over corruption allegations.

“We received a letter from the finance inspectorate general in October, citing allegations of abuse of authority implicating a tax official whose job is to carry out taxpayer assessments,” Saud told The Jakarta Post.

AR had allegedly abused his power and caused state losses while assessing two companies, PT SKJ and PT KGS.

Saud said that investigators had questioned 10 witnesses and had sent a letter to the Finance Minister on Feb. 8, asking for a permit to access related documents.

“We are waiting for the permit to be able to investigate [related] taxation documents,” he said.

Last week, the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) detained junior taxman Dhana Widyatmika after questioning the suspect over corruption allegations for more than 10 hours.

Investigators declared Dhana a corruption suspect and charged him with accepting bribes and gratuities. The decision was based on information provided by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) suggesting that Dhana had Rp 28 billion (US$3.1 million) and $250,000 in accounts in 18 banks.

Dhana is now detained at the AGO detainment center for the next 20 days.
