AKARTA: Members of the Indonesian Sports Council (KONI) will attend congresses of the Indonesian Soccer Association (PSSI) and the Indonesian Soccer Rescue Committee (KPSI) simultaneously on Sunday in Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan, and Jakarta.

“We will visit the two congresses as requested [by the organizations], but only as observers,” KONI chief Tono Suratman said Saturday, as quoted by tempo.co.

The PSSI scheduled its annual meeting in Palangkaraya to discuss its plans for the future, including recognizing the Indonesian Super League (ISL).

“We’ve committed to recognizing the ISL. The decision will be finalized during the annual meeting,” PSSI disciplinary committee head Bernhard Limbong said Friday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

The league has been described as a “breakaway league” by the association following an internal dispute among members of the PSSI. The association-sanction competition is the Indonesian Premier League.

The split in Indonesian soccer caused severe chaos within the association, as it banned the country’s top players — who joined the ISL — from selection in the national team.

The consequences were seen when Indonesia made a terrible history by losing 10-0 against Bahrain in a recent match in the 2014 World Cup qualifying round for the Asian Zone.

Meanwhile, opposing party KPSI intends to elect a new leader in its extraordinary meeting in Jakarta.
