ANGERANG: Customs and excise officers have foiled an attempt to smuggle 126 grams of crystal methamphetamine worth Rp 252 million from China into the country through Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Two suspects, both Indonesians, have been taken into custody.

Customs office chief Oza Olivia said on Monday that the suspects — Ahing, 52 and Sumarno, 32 — were identified as the intended recipients of the package, which was sent through a courier service.

The package contained a telephone. According to Oza, the officers found eight plastic bags containing the drugs in the device.

“The officers examined the telephone and found the crystal meth packets hidden inside it,” she told a press conference at the airport.

In cooperation with the airport police, the customs officers delivered the package to the recipient address and arrested Sumarno. The latter led the officers to Ahing, his superior in an electricity equipment trading firm, who had asked him to take delivery of the package.

Since January, customs officers have foiled 13 drug smuggling attempts and seized 3,441.8 grams of crystal meth, 628.5 grams of cocaine, 536 Levomethorphan pills, 300 happy five pills and 41 ecstasy pills worth Rp 8.5 billion in total.

Officers also arrested 17 Indonesians, one Malaysian and one Sierra Leonean as suspects in the smuggling cases.
