Ayu’s nest

House of sunlight may best describe popular author Ayu Utami’s home.

As in her books, she had a clear concept when designing her house in the Utan Kayu area in East Jakarta — an open and simple garden house.

“To me, the energy of my house is the sun. That is why I made a small garden in the middle of the house, so no single room is away from sunlight. Sunlight is very important for me,” she says.

Famed for her breakthrough debut novel Saman in 1998, the author of seven novels finds every corner of the house fascinating and caters to her needs. Aware of her need to have a view while writing and reading, Ayu
designed an office overlooking her yard with a view of the sky.

“Our eyes need to relax every so often. At night, sometimes I can enjoy watching the moon while working.” — JP
