ire gutted 12 classrooms at the Yayasan Pendidikan Umat Islam (YPUI) senior high school in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, on Sunday morning.
Kebayoran Lama subdistrict chief Budi Wibowo said that the fire was apparently caused by a short circuit in one of the rooms in the school at around 7:30 a.m.
Due to the fire, all school activities would be moved to nearby schools, Budi said.
“I have talked with the school and education agency, and they will relocate school activities to elementary schools SD 03, 05, and 06 in Ciputat,” Budi said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.
Head of the operational unit at the South Jakarta fire agency, Mochtar Zakaria, said that they had deployed a total of 18 fire trucks to extinguish the fire.
“We managed to put out the fire two hours later. There were no casualties during the incident but the material loss is expected to be about Rp 100 million (US$11,800),” he said.
