ormer youth and sports minister Andi Mallarangeng, who has been named a suspect in the Hambalang sports complex scandal, is expected to disclose the involvement of other individuals in the Rp 1.17 trillion (US$121.96 million) project.
Agus Sunaryanto, the head of Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) investigation division, said he hoped the Democratic Party politician would cooperate with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and reveal the names of fellow politicians involved in the scandal.
“We were relying on Deddy Kusdinar to reveal more names [involved in the case]. He testified the minister [Andi] was the most responsible individual involved in the project. Now, Andi should disclose [other names] to the KPK,” Agus said in a discussion in Jakarta on Saturday. Deddy is the former head of the financial and internal affairs bureau at the Youth and Sports Ministry who was the first identified suspect in the scandal.
Agus indicated a handful of high-profile figures in the case were left untouched by the KPK.
Former Democratic Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin had repeatedly accused Andi and Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum of accepting kickbacks from the project. Anas has already been questioned by the antigraft body but has not been identified as a suspect.
Democratic Party lawmaker Ruhut Sitompul urged Anas to step down, considering his name has been mentioned several times by Nazaruddin as one of the politicians allegedly involved in the case.
“I have told Andi, Anas Urbaningrum and others who have been mentioned [by Nazaruddin], to please be willing to resign if you love your party,” said Ruhut during the discussion.
Meanwhile on Saturday, Andi and his family moved out of the ministerial residence in South Jakarta. They now reside at his private home in Cilangkap, East Jakarta.
Rizal Mallarangeng, Andi’s younger brother, confirmed the family had appointed Luhut MP Pangaribuan and Harry Ponto to represent Andi. Rizal added the lawyers had begun to examine the allegations.
“We want to study it thoroughly and build our argument. We will continue to observethe legal process. Please don’t mix this up with politics,” Rizal said.
He added the family might appoint two or three more lawyers to represent the former minister, although they have no interest in seeking legal assistance from the Democratic Party, where Andi used to serve as the secretary of the board of patrons’. (yps)
