ustoms officers at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport have foiled the smuggling of 248 hornbill casques and 189 pangolin scales worth an estimated Rp 1 billion (US$103,680).
Four Chinese nationals have been arrested as suspects in the case.
Airport customs office chief Oza Olavia said on Friday that the four men were on their way to Hong Kong on Thursday when hornbill casques and pangolin scales were discovered in their luggage.
Hornbills and pangolin, or scaly anteaters, are protected species. Their casques and scales are sought after as ingredients in Chinese traditional medicines.
The head of the Jakarta Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Awen Supranata, said that officials would intensify their investigation into the rampant smuggling of endangered animals for their body parts.
