AKARTA: A journalist who was fired by Metro TV has reported her employers to the House of Representatives and the Manpower and Transmigration Ministry for attempting to stop her from unionizing journalists at the media giant.
Luviana, an assistant producer with Metro TV, was fired in 2011 after setting up a labor union.
While Metro TV founder and owner Surya Paloh promised to rehire Luviana, he eventually sent her a letter confirming her dismissal.
“I come here because the company has apparently closed all doors for a win-win solution. I want him [Surya Paloh] to keep his promise,” Luviana said before Muhaimin and lawmakers from House Commission IX overseeing manpower and transmigration on Monday.
Luviana told those assembled at the House about the individuals who allegedly purported to be NasDem Party supporters who attacked Luviana during a rally at Surya Paloh’s office last week.
Muhaimin said that his ministry would take over the case, as the West Jakarta Labor Office had failed to mediate the dispute.
“We will follow-up on the case. We will find a new mediator to help resolve it,” Muhaimin said.
Commission IX chairperson Ribka Tjiptaning said that her commission planned to summon the management of Metro TV next week.
