Slippery year of the slithering snake

In the Year of the Water Snake, commitments and promises will be tested.

Last year, during the Year of the Water Dragon, couples were encouraged to tie the knot as feng shui masters and soothsayers said it was the perfect time to make love. This year, those who did tie the knot will have their vows tested.

“It’s not going to be a very good year for romance. Couples will need to be very careful if they want to maintain their relationships,” feng shui expert Gunadi Widjaja told The Jakarta Post recently.

Chinese New Year will fall on Feb. 10 and the Year of the Water Snake will slither in.

Gunadi said the Water Snake was agile and dangerous, so it could sneak up undetected.

“The snake is quick and fast as it moves while the water is robust,” the feng shui expert said. “Couples need to watch out for backstabbers. Avoid any fights and excessive emotions.”

As relationships will go through a fragile period and be tested, consequently there will be an increased number of divorces.

“Major celebrity divorces will likely occur in the coming months,” Gunadi said.

Another feng shui expert, Yohan Suyangga, said that the Year of the Water Snake would bring forth celebrity relationship meltdowns.

“We will see major scandals, affairs, ones we have never seen before,” Yohan said.

Yohan, however, said that the Year of the Water Snake was not all bad news for relationships.

“Snakes have a poison that has a great effect. But, one could use its effects positively or negatively.”

Yohan said the coming year was still good for weddings. “Those who are seeking a lifetime partner could find them this year.”

The Year of the Water Snake will also serve as a prelude to the election year in 2014.

Yohan said many young leaders would surface on the political scene. “It’s surprisingly a good year for politics,” he said.

“Those who used to compete against each other will team-up and form coalitions,” Yohan said.

Gunadi, however, said that although the upcoming year would be dynamic, it would also be hard on politicians.

“Political ties may be broken. It won’t be easy for politician to cling to their seats,” he warned.

“Cases similar to that of Aceng Fikri will surface in greater numbers,” he added, referring to the infamous Garut Regent who is facing impeachment for his controversial marriage. The regent caused public outrage after he was found to have divorced his 17-year-old wife after four days of marriage under Islamic law.

Both feng shui experts agreed that major corruption cases would be busted in the coming year, as those in power would experience a shaky road ahead.

“This will be a prominent year for the Corruption Eradication Commission [KPK]. The commission will regularly make news headlines,” Yohan said.

The economy would continue to go strong in the coming months, as sectors such as property, export-import, precious metals, plantation and hospitality would see stable increases, Yohan said.

“There will be fluctuations in prices and profit, but in general, the economy will be moving upward,” he said

The feng shui expert said that the Year of the Water Snake was a good time for young people to start investing.

“Those who have yet to start a venture should start now and those who have started should expand their businesses. The coming year will the best economic year in the last 60 years,” Yohan said.
