Riyanto Subagja won the men’s singles match after beating compatriot Arief Gifar Ramadhan in three sets 21-17, 15-21, 21-15, while doubles pairing Wahyu Nayaka Arya Pankaryanira and Ade Yusuf eased past Selvanus Geh and Ronald Alexander, also from Indonesia, in fight to the finish at 21-19, 12-21, 22-20.
In women’s singles, Febby Angguni had to be satisfied to finish second after losing to Neslihan Yigit of Turkey 15-21, 14-21.
“I hope the victory in Iran can have a positive impact to our shuttlers when they are competing in other championships in the future. I hope the women’s team can improve their achievements,” said Christian Hadinata, the head of the Indonesian Badminton Association’s (PBSI) national training camp division, in a press release sent to The Jakarta Post on Monday.
Indonesia only deployed athletes for four events, namely men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles, to vie for a total of US$15,000 in prize money up for grabs. Indonesia did not send shuttlers to play in the mixed doubles events in the Feb. 14-17 competition in Tehran.
With the achievements, Riyanto and the pairing of Wahyu and Ade were granted 4,000 points each while runner-ups in their category earned 3,400 points each.
Riyanto, now world no. 101, pocketed $1,125 while and Wahyu and Ade both received $1,185.
