T

he police arrested former director of BPR Bumidhana Adhigraha Bank for fraudulent activities involving over Rp 8 billion (US$826,873) in fake credit applications. The suspect, M. Denny Azhar Lubis, 53, was arrested at his home in Tanjung Duren subdistrict, West Jakarta.

Tangerang regency police detective chief, Comr. Shinto Silitonga, said on Monday that the arrest had been made that day following a report filed by a staff member from the Investigation and Mediation Directorate (DIMP) at Bank of
Indonesia.

“In the central bank’s annual audit in 2010, DIMP discovered the alleged engineering of fake credit amounting to Rp 8.3 billions filed through the loan provider company by 169 customers,” Shinto said.

He said that the suspect, along with former head of collection department at the BPR and three customer service members of staff, falsified the data of 169 customers.

“They used the money disbursed by the central bank for their own personal gain,” he said.

Separately, the police also arrested an elementary school principal and a factory worker for allegedly tricking victims into entrusting their money to them.

Shinto said that factory worker Saryani, 48, a resident of Sentul village in Balaraja district, told the victims that he could miraculously multiply their money.

“Dadan Rohiyat, the principal of SD Kubang in Sukamulya district, helped to convince the victims about Saryani’s magical ability to double up any sum of money,”
he said.

The suspects admitted they had duped people four times between September and December 2011 in Saga and Tobat villages, Balaraja district and in Bunar village, Sukamulya district.

According to Shinto, the suspects asked the victims to put the money they wanted to be multiplied into a box wrapped in white cloth. They then told them to perform an ablution ritual before praying in an Islamic manner. When the victims left, the two departed with the money.

“They collected cash totalling Rp 52 million from the crime,” Shinto said, adding that the arrest was made following a report filed by Akhmad, one of the victims.

The police confiscated six boxes of various sizes wrapped with white cloth and purple tape and Rp 7.5 million cash from the suspects as evidence.

The police revealed on Monday that they had managed to recapture three detainees on the run from a hideout in Langon village, Jepara regency in Central Java on Sunday.

Police chief Sr. Comr. Bambang Priyo Handogo identified the detainees as Eko Wartono alias Koplak, 32, a resident of Binong subdistrict, Curug; M. Toha, 28, a resident of Margasari village, Tigaraksa, Tangerang regency; and Emron alias Ron, 23, a resident of Pekon Balak village, Tenggamus regency, Lampung.

“The detainees escaped from Cikupa police custody on Feb. 22 after cutting the iron bars on the cell’s ceiling,” he said.

He said that Eko was part of a group who had been arrested in a serial murder case that claimed the lives of three Bandung-based rental car drivers as well as a motorcycle owner. Toha and Emron were arrested for a series of motorcycle thefts.

According to Bambang, the three managed to escape from custody with the assistance of Agus Wanto, Eko’s friend who visited him on Feb. 19. Agus smuggled in a small saw and drove the get-away vehicle, a rented car.

The incident resulted in the Cikupa police chief Comr. Arlon Sitinjak and 15 of his subordinates to be removed from their respective posts as part of disciplinary sanctions.
