Your letters: Indonesia needs a leader like Thatcher

H

er voice, her hair, her handbag and everything that became popular symbols of her decisiveness and true grit is now tucked away.

However, her legacy and spirit is far too great to be forgotten and far too powerful to be pushed aside.

After all, who could ever omit the lasting impact Margaret Thatcher had on Britain as well as on the international stage? There was a reason why she was (and will be forever) known as “The Iron Lady”.

Like many politicians, her decisions were sometimes controversial and unpopular.

Riots were everywhere in Britain as unemployment soared, she was known to be very hard toward her cabinet ministers and in terms of international affairs, she detested the reunification of Germany.

Yet, she was a major figure in bringing the Cold War to an end and took back the Falkland Islands, which had been invaded by the Argentinian Junta.

So yes, we can admit that some of Baroness Thatcher’s ideas were rather explosive but look at her persona, her strength and her charisma.

She gave voice to ideas that some people were afraid to even whisper about. She was a grocer’s daughter turned prime minister.

She fought a man’s world in the government and won. Three times in fact (She won three general elections in total).

Indonesia needs someone with that sort of valor, the sort of dominant spirit that is not afraid. We need a piece of iron to smash corruption and inconsistency in this country.
