Telkom loses out in Myanmar tender

tate-owned telecommunication company PT TelekomunikasiIndonesia (Telkom) will continue to expand in Myanmar despite failing to winthe tender for mobile phone services in the ASEAN country.
Telkom public relations vice presidentArif Prabowo said on Friday that despite the failure, Telkom would still expandin Myanmar particularly in low-risk business such as information andcommunication technology solutions and digital media business.
Telkom recently took part in a tender fora license to operate mobile phone services in Myanmar, but failed in thepre-qualification stage.
Telkom, which recently opened businessesin Hong Kong, Timor Leste, Singapore, Australia and Malaysia, plans to expandin neighboring countries, including Myanmar, Arif told news portal kompas.com.
Some of its overseas businesses are quitesuccessful. Its subsidiary Telekomunikasi International (Telin), for examplerecorded a 25 percent increase in customers in Hong Kong in three months, from25,000 in January to 40,000 last month. The company is one of the top threemobile virtual network operators (MVNO) in Hong Kong, along with BritishVodafone and People China Mobile.
