panel of Semaranggraft court judges sentenced former Salatiga mayor John Manuel Manoppo to three-and-a-half-yearsin prison over his involvement in the Salatiga south outer ring roadconstruction graft case. John was also ordered to pay Rp 100million (U$ 10,293). Failure to pay the fine would cost him anadditional three months in prison.
'The defendant has been convincingly proven to have conducted graft and has therefore violated Law no.20/2001 on corruption eradication,' presiding judge Suyadi said on Tuesday.
He said John had abused his authority as mayor by endorsing PT Kuntjup and PT Kadi International Joint Operation to win the tender of the Salatiga South outer ring road construction project despite the factthat PT Kuntjup was not the lowest bidder with Rp 47 billion. The lowest bidder was PT Bali Pacific with Rp 42 billion.
Both John and the prosecutors said that they would first consult with lawyers and superior officials before commenting on the ruling. (dic)
