Batam, Sweden to set up eco-airport team

T

he Swedish government and the Batam Free Trade Zone Management Agency (BP FTZ) will form a team to study a proposal from Swedish aircraft, defense and security company Saab to develop Hang Nadim International Airport into an eco-friendly airport.

Agency spokesman Dwi Djoko Wiwoho told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday that Swedish Ambassador to Indonesia, Ewa Polano, met agency chief Mustofa Wijaya on Monday.

Polano visited Batam, Riau Islands, with Saab LFV Aviation Consulting AB chief representative Lars Nielsen and representatives from Indonesia Aero Maintenance to discuss the proposal.

According to Djoko, there are only 11 eco-friendly airports in the world; six in Sweden, four in Norway and one in Italy.

'€œThe aircraft served by eco-airports must be new and all supporting vehicles at the airport must be eco-friendly. Based on our observations of the 11 existing airports, it will be a challenge to realize an eco-airport,'€ said Djoko.

He was unable to reveal any further details regarding the team or the funds required for the feasibility study.
