Husky aircraft with registration number L 0108 reportedly belonging to the Indonesian Aero Sport Federation (FASI) careened off the runway in Pondok Cabe Air Base, Pamulang, South Tangerang, early on Saturday.
Pilot Wiwin Nugroho and co-pilot Albi survived the incident and no injuries were reported.
At 11:23 a.m. the Jakarta Police Traffic Management Center's (TMC) Twitter account @TMCPoldaMetro posted: 'The aircraft faced a landing failure accident and there have been no injuries reported. The accident is now being handled by officers in charge.'
During the accident, the aircraft reportedly overturned.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said the accident was reportedly due to a braking problem.
'The aircraft went off the runway of Pondok Cabe Air Base at 10:25 a.m. There was some problem with its brakes,' Rikwanto said in a short text message on Saturday afternoon, adding that Husky aircraft always used tow gliders.
'The accident has damaged the propeller of the aircraft and now the case is being handled by the chief of Pondok Cabe Air Base,' he went on.
Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang S. Ervan confirmed the accident.
'Yes, there was an aircraft accident in the morning in Pondok Cabe Air Base, a Husky aircraft with registration number L 0108,' he said.
He said he was unsure if the aircraft belonged to the FASI or the Indonesian Military (TNI), but the registration number indicated the 'L' code was a military registration.
'From the information I've received from the field, the aircraft was flown by FASI members. They were on a regular practice for the day and the accident did not cause any injuries,' he went on.
He said that the TNI and the FASI had been working together for a long time and both had a very good relationship.
'Some TNI members are FASI members,' he added.
Contacted separately, Army spokesman Brig. Gen. Rukman Ahmad said the Husky aircraft did not belong to the TNI.
'From the information I have so far, the aircraft is not the TNI's,' he said.
He confirmed the aircraft was flown by FASI members who were on a regular practice session, but he could not tell whether it belonged to the FASI or not.
Pondok Cabe Air Base's runway is 1,984 meters long and 45 meters wide. (hrl)
