Two killed in mortar explosion at training site

wo people were reportedly killed, while four others werewounded on Saturday after a mortar exploded at the Indonesian Military (TNI)training ground in Karang Tekok in Banyuputih district, Situbondo, East Java.

TNI had conducted a collaborative training exercise, attended by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Boediono, on Friday. A total of 16,745 soldiers took part in the exercise. 

It has been reported that six men went to the training ground in search of cartridge casings. They aimed to sell the casings to earn some money to support their families, according to Situbondo Police spokesman Adj. Comr. Wahyudi.

They accidentally found a mortar and tried to break it to get the brass before the active mortar exploded.

'They attempted to get the brass to sell the pieces. The explosion killed two residents and injured four others. The incident is still under our investigation,' said Wahyudi as quoted by tribunjatim.com.

The two fatalities were Sukur, 39, and Untung, 34, while the injured residents were Ahyari, 50, Didi, 40, Yunus, 40, and Sunar, 35.

According to tempo.co, Sukur reportedly died instantly on the scene, while Untung died on the way to the nearby health center
