SBY told to extend forest clearance moratorium

T

he Indonesian Conservation Community (KKI) Warsi wants President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to extend a 2011 moratorium on forestry permit issuance.

'€œThe two-year moratorium period has not been effectively used to straighten up the chaotic state of forestry permit issuance,'€ KKI Warsi executive director Rakhmat Hidayat said on Wednesday.

The moratorium had not produced a single map to be used as the reference for spatial planning and issuing forestry permits, he added.

'€œThere has not been any sign that there will be a single map that can be used as reference for natural resource management in Indonesia,'€ Rakhmat said.

The moratorium, which bans the issuance of new conversion permits for natural forest and peatlands, is set to expire on May 20 and officials have not made it clear if it would be extended.

Rakhmat said that the moratorium had also not protected the rights of the nation'€™s indigenous minorities, such as the Orang Rimba and Talang Mamak in Jambi, who still depend on forests for their livelihood.

'€œThe moratorium is the right policy and we still need it to protect primary forests and peat lands as the sources of people'€™s livelihoods and biodiversity and in supporting the government'€™s policy in reducing carbon emissions,'€ said Rakhmat. (nai/ebf)
