Muhammadiyah chairman Din Syamsuddin highlighted the right to have a religion in his remarks at the 14th General Assembly of Jewish Congress, held in Budapest, Hungary, on May 5 to 7.

He delivered the remarks in the congress'€™ Freedom of Religious Practices session together with President of the Bishops'€™ Conferences of Europe, Ukraine'€™s Chief Rabbi, and Professor Chloe Meyer from New York.

In his remarks, Din said that the right to religion was the most basic of human rights.

'€œEven God gives human beings the freedom to choose on whether he or she wants to be a faithful person or not,'€ he said in a statement made available to The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

Din was the only Muslim speaker who had a session in the international congress of the Jewish leaders.

'€œThe followers of three Abrahamic religions -- Jew, Christian, and Islam '€“ need to get closer each other and live in peace and harmony, as well as to enhance stronger cooperation among civilizations for the sake of humanity,'€ he said. (ebf)
