Minaret collapses: 2 dead, 4 injured

Two construction workers were killed and four others were injured when a minaret at the Achmad Bakrie Grand Mosque in Kisaran, North Sumatra, collapsed on Monday

wo construction workers were killed and four others were injured when a minaret at the Achmad Bakrie Grand Mosque in Kisaran, North Sumatra, collapsed on Monday.

The deceased, both 20, were killed instantly, the other four remain hospitalized.

Asahan Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Yustan Alpiani said the incident occurred around 11 a.m.

The police investigation is ongoing.

Asahan Regent Taufan Gama Simatupang, who is also managing the mosque construction project, said his administration would work together with police in the investigation.

The construction of the Achmad Bakrie Grand Mosque, with a price tag of Rp 40 billion (US$4.10 million), commenced in May 2011. The cornerstone-laying ceremony was conducted by Golkar Party chairman Aburizal Bakrie, who is also Achmad Bakrie's son.

Taufan was backed by the Golkar Party in the 2010 regency election.
