he Islam-based United Development Party (PPP) has removed the name of Islam Defenders Front (FPI) spokesman Munarman from its provisional legislative candidate list.
"Munarman has been replaced by Ibnu Jajar Dewantara, chairman of the PPP chapter in South Sumatra," party secretary general M. Romahurmuziy said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Wednesday. The party, he said, also cancelled the nomination of singer Emilia Contessa, who was replaced by the party's sharia council chairman, Anas Tohir.
Romahurmuziy did not elaborate on the replacement of Munarman, only saying he was replaced due to several considerations.
Munarman, however, said he never wanted to become a lawmaker and refused to be nominated by the PPP. "I do not know. They just registered my name," he told the online news portal.
The PPP has decided to become more Islamic to gain votes in 2014 despite surveys saying Islamic parties are becoming less popular. The party has courted several Islamic organizations, including hard-line groups like the FPI.
