n asignificant development in the fast growing ties between Washington andJakarta, the United States said on Friday nightthat it would enhance military cooperation with Indonesia and support thearchipelagic nation'€™s military modernization through US military sales.

DefenseMinister Purnomo Yusgiantoro met the new US Defense Secretary ChuckHagel on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Friday night.It was the first meeting between the two.

"Theyreaffirmed the importance of deepening ties in support of the US-IndonesiaComprehensive Partnership, an initiative of presidents Barack Obama andSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono, calling for closer ties between our twogovernments and societies,'€ Pentagon spokesperson George Little saidafter the bilateral meeting.

However,according to Little, Hagel emphasized the importance of human rightsaccountability to sustain the momentum in defense ties between bothcountries.

Hagelinvited Purnomo to Washington for further discussions.
