xecutives of the ruling Democratic Party said that they are interested in seeing Muslim intellectual Anies Baswedan and former Constitutional Court chief justice Mahfud MD at the party's presidential primary, slated for later this month.

Deputy chairman of the party Max Sopacua said that both figures must apply to join the primary.

"We are open to anyone, Anies Baswedan, Mahfud MD, everybody, they can apply. We have a selection process but we already know that those two individuals are credible," Max said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Max also said that to gauge the popularity of candidates joining the primary, the party would assign three pollsters to conduct an opinion poll on their electability.

Earlier, the Democratic Party leadership indicated its interest in popular Jakarta Governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, drawing ire from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). Jokowi is a PDI-P member and is rumored to be the party's candidate for the 2014 presidential election.

PDI-P chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri hinted she would not run in the 2014 presidential race.
