alaysia declared a state of emergency in Muar and Ledang, in the southern state of Johor, on Sunday, as smoke from fires in Sumatra caused hazardous air pollution.

"Prime Minister Najib Razak has agreed to declare a state of emergency in Muar and Ledang which will immediately take effect," MalaysianNatural Resources and Environment Minister Palanivel Govindasamy said via his Facebook account on Sunday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

The air pollution index in the two regions exceeded 750. A reading above 300 indicates a dangerous level of pollutants.

Clearing land for palm oil plantations in Sumatra has become a chronic problem during dry season from June to September.

The haze from fires in Riau, Sumatra, also covers Singapore but air quality there has improved during the weekend.

Indonesia has accused several companies based in Malaysia and Singapore of being partly responsible for the fires. Sime Darby, a Malaysian company, and Singapore-based Wilmar Group both deny the accusations. (fan/ebf)
