While crowning veteran rock bands Motorhead and Black Sabbath as the kings of heavy metal on Monday, British-based metal music magazine Metal Hammer named Indonesian great Burgerkill the torch carrier of metal this year.

In the magazine’s annual metal music awards, the Metal Hammer Golden Gods, the death metallers from Bandung won the “Metal as F*ck” category, beating among others Putin-resistant punk-rock collective Pussy Riot and former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted.

The category is reserved for musicians who live metal music not only as a genre, but also as a life cause. French group Gojira’s initiative to support the Sea Shepherd marine conservation group was also nominated for this category.

“Spearheading the incredible rise of the Indonesian metal scene, Burgerkill are the very definition of trailblazers in 2013. Well done, guys, this is hugely deserved,” said the magazine on its website, welcoming the band’s victory.

Established in 1995, Burgerkill is a lone wolf among the wider pop scene in the country. The group faced hard times after missing out on commercial success—despite major-label support—and the death of their frontman Ivan Scumbag.

But they managed to return with a new album, Venomous, in 2011 and just released We will Bleed, a documentary on their journey, this year.

The UK'€™s top metal awards event gave the most prestigious award the '€œGolden Gods'€ to Motorhead for making a significant contribution to the rock and heavy metal scenes over nearly four decades. Best known for its 1980 hit '€œAce of Spades'€, the UK band received the Golden Gods award at the 11th annual ceremony.

Black Sabbath won the award for best album for 13 which soared to No. 1 in the British charts last week, giving the band its first number one album in nearly 43 years, which is a record interval between chart-toppers.

The band, which is scheduled to begin a US tour this summer followed by concerts in South America and Europe later in the year, also won the award for best UK band.

'€œFrom honoring the lords of our world Black Sabbath and the crown princes of rock and roll Motorhead as well as today'€™s most cutting-edge acts, there'€™s simply no other event like it,'€ said Alexander Milas, editor of Metal Hammer magazine, as quoted by Reuters.

Motorhead frontman Lemmy, 67, who is the sole constant member of the band set up in 1975, received the Golden Gods award from members of Guns N'€™ Roses, Velvet Revolver and Loaded bassist Duff McKagan.

The best new band award went to Bleed From Within who formed in 2005 while the best international band was named as the US'€™s Stone Sour from Des Moines, Iowa.

Gojira, previously known as Godzilla, won the award for best live band while the best song prize went to the American rock band Coheed and Cambria for '€œDark Side of Me'€.
