Transportation Minister EE Mangindaan said public transportation fares would increase by 15 percent due to the recent fuel price hikes
Transportation Minister EE Mangindaan said public transportation fares would increase by 15 percent due to the recent fuel price hikes.
'Based on a joint agreement with the Association of Land Transportation Owners [Organda] and other stakeholders, including ports and terminals, we agreed a 15 percent maximum increase,' the minister said on Monday, adding that the Transportation Minister Regulation on the public transportation tariff increase was effective as of Sunday.
The government announced the price of Premium fuel had increased to Rp 6,500 (66 US cents) from Rp 4,500 while diesel increased to Rp 5,500 from Rp 4,500.
Monitoring activities are to be carried out by local administrations to prevent violations.
'Teams have been dispatched to monitor the fare increase. Tariff increases should not exceed 15 percent. Any violation is subject to the appropriate sanctions,' Mangindaan said as quoted by Antara news agency.
There will be no fare increase for railway commuters or air travelers because the government subsidizes trains and aircrafts use avtur, which is not subject to the fuel price hike. (fan/ebf)
