Netherlands introduces '€˜community policing'€™ to Papua Police

apua Policechief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian said the police would soon commence acommunity policing program that was aimed at improving the relationshipbetween the police and the public.

Hesaid the program was provided by the Dutch government via the InternationalOrganization for Migration (IOM). He added the program had a three-yearduration and would be started with series of research projects conductedby the state-owned CendrawasihUniversity.

'€œWewill use the research results for the program,'€ he said.

Hesaid the research was expected to be finished by the end of this year.

Theprogram has been designed to provide police officers with additionalskills and knowledge on health, teaching, agriculture and religion. Asmany as 4,000 police officers throughout Papua will participate in theprogram. (fan/dic)
