wo public buses crashed into one another in Cirebon district, on Saturday, claiming the lives of five people: the two drivers of the buses and three passengers. Eight other passengers were also severely injured in the incident.
An inter-provincial bus, the Sumber Alam, which was traveling at high speed from Central Java, suddenly lost control before veering across the central road separators and onto the oncoming lane where a second bus, the Dedy Jaya, crashed into it.
Witnesses said the collision produced a noise like thunder, after which a number of local residents immediately rushed to the scene to help the victims.
The dead victims have been identified as Purwanto; Budiono; Mochamad Cipto; Tarsono, and Maryadi; while those injured have been identified as Candra; Jabidin; Siti Mutaharo; Tiyaningsih; Waluyo; Jawahir; Dendi, and Topik.
Cirebon Traffic Police chief Adj. Comr. Indra Setiawan said the injured had been taken to the Arjawinangun Hospital. He said the police were currently trying to determine the cause of the accident. (dic)
