Earthquake hits East Java

A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck southeast of Malang, East Java, on Monday at 9:13 a.m. local time, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

'€œThe quake'€™s epicenter was in the Indian Ocean, about 112 kilometers from Malang or 202 kilometers from Surabaya,'€ said National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, as quoted by Antara news agency.

BNPB's Malang Office also reported the quake lasted for up to 5 seconds and was felt by residents in Malang, but no major damage was reported. (apt)
