he Aceh provincial government has earmarked over Rp 64.96 billion (US$6.5 million) as an emergency response fund for restoring infrastructure in earthquake ravaged Bener Meriah and Aceh Tengah regencies.
The July 7 earthquake, which measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, killed at least 35 people and damaged more than 4,300 houses and buildings.
Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah said at his official residence in Banda Aceh on Thursday that he would directly oversee the restoration process, which included the repair or reconstruction of worship places, schools, clinics and other facilities.
"For that purpose, I will work from Aceh Tengah, starting on Monday," he said as quoted by Kompas.com.
"The
Aceh Disaster Mitigation Agency will do the restoration since they are
the only authority for distributing evacuee aid," he said.
The governor acknowledged that the provincial administration wasn't yet able to calculate the total amount of losses in the regencies.
"We are still completing the data so we can't announce the exact amount right now, but I am sure it will be done within this week," he said.
According to the agency, the total number of evacuees has reached 48,563 people in Aceh Tengah and 2,265 people in Bener Meriah. (fan)
