President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has blasted Agriculture Minister Suswono for his failure to bring down the price of beef before the start of Ramadhan.
"I have to remind you all that you [agriculture minister] have to have a sense of urgency as well as a sense of crisis," Yudhoyono said in a limited Cabinet meeting at Halim Perdanakusuma air base in East Jakarta over the weekend.
Yudhoyono said he was concerned with the soaring price of beef.
"I have grown impatient with this the same way that the people have grown impatient," he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Yudhoyono also told his ministers not to play blame games among themselves in relation to stabilizing beef prices, which continue to soar. According to the President, soaring beef prices are directly related to problems in issuing an import permit.
Beef is selling for Rp 70,000 (US$7) to Rp 100,000 per kilogram, up from Rp 50,000. Bulog plans to import 800 tons of frozen beef from Australia as part of the 3,000-ton quota set for importation of the commodity to stabilize beef prices.
