The Jakarta Transportation Agency will conduct urine tests on intercity bus drivers as part of its efforts to reduce the number of traffic accidents during the annual exodus.
Agency head Udar Pristono said that the urine tests would be conducted a week before until a week after the Idul Fitri holiday, which falls on Aug. 8 and 9, at the capital's four major terminals, namely Kampung Rambutan and Pulogadung in East Jakarta, Lebak Bulus in South Jakarta and Kalideres in West Jakarta.
"Up to 3,680 drivers will have to take the tests. Drivers using drugs won't be allowed to leave the terminal," he said on Tuesday.
Last year, of the 791 bus drivers who took urine tests, 68 were determined to have taken illegal substances.
