One million motorists to enter Central Java soon, says police chief

C

entral Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Dwi Priyatno has said around onemillion motorists are expected to enter the province in a few days to come, ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday.

'€œWe will establish more rest stops for the motorists so they can use them while they are here,'€ he said on Thursday.

Besides establishing more rest areas, he went on; the police would also deploy snipers and patrol officers to safeguard the annual exodus. He added that the snipers would be placed in some areas known for their high crime rates.

As many as 13,111 police officers will be deployed to safeguard the upcoming Idul Fitri holiday dubbed the Ketupat Candi Operation.  The police will focus on safeguarding public facilities and services such as banks, power plants, markets and places of worship.

The Central Java administration, in cooperation with the local highway company, has also decided to open a new toll road connecting Ungaran-Bawen, which had been under construction. The opening of the 12-kilometer toll road was meant to help the police in tackling traffic.

Dozens of motorists from various regions were seen entering Cirebon, a region bordering West Java. Most of the motorists were travelling in groups for safety reasons.

'€œWe met at a rest area and then decided to move together in a group so we could feel more safe,'€ he said.(dic)
