ational Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Agus Rianto said 178 homeward-bound travellers died between Friday and Monday, before reaching their hometowns to celebrate Idul Fitri.
'As of Monday, we recorded 832 traffic accidents that claimed 178 lives and severely injured 257 people. There are 133 victims who sustained minor injuries,' Agus said on Tuesday at the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta.
He added most of the traffic accidents involved motorcyclists.
'About 184 accidents were due to the drivers being tired or drowsy and 104 were caused by driving too close to other vehicles. In 75 cases, the drivers violated the speed limit. In 20 cases, the drivers consumed alcohol,' Agus said.
National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo said the number of fatalities during the Idul Fitri holiday had decreased significantly compared to the same period last year.
'As of three days before Idul Fitri [Monday], the number of fatalities has dropped by 40 percent compared to last year. We hope that less traffic accidents occur in the coming days,' he said in Jakarta.
Last year, 908 people died during Idul Fitri holiday travel, which lasted for two weeks. The figure was 16 percent higher than that recorded in 2011.
