oekarno-Hatta International Airport'scustoms and excise officers have unveiled a series of drug smuggling attemptsand confiscated 9.9 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, worth Rp 13.5billion, while also naming 10 suspects.
Muhammad Sigit of the customs and excise office said the suspects were five Indonesians, three Malaysians, a Vietnamese and a Nigerian.
'We managed to arrest these suspects after conducting a series of profile analyses of passengers arriving between July 26 and Aug. 11,' he said.
National Narcotics Agency (BNN) spokesman Sr. Comr. Soemirat Dwiyanto said the raids had prevented up to 70,000 people from using drugs.
'There are some 4 million people who consume drugs across the country and Indonesia is still the main target of drug trafficking,' he said.
Since January, officers have foiled 58 drug smuggling cases at the airport and named 31 Indonesians, two South Africans, ten Chinese, four Filipinos, two Nigerians, six Taiwanese, an American, five Malaysians, two Indians and a Vietnamese as suspects.
Officers have confiscated at total of 73,544 grams of crystal meth, 7, 489 grams of ketamine, 289 grams of heroin and 414,441 ecstasy pills worth Rp 250.5 billion in total. (dic)
